Mr. Thad Schmenk
Having graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in languages and education, Mr. Schmenk taught in Japanese public schools for three years. Returning to the States, Mr. Schmenk taught German at Fort Dorchester High School (FDHS) for six years. After earning his master’s degree in educational leadership from the Citadel in 2006, he worked as an assistant principal for five years at FDHS. In 2011, he joined the Alston Middle School faculty and community as principal.
He and his wife Susan have three One child attends a local public middle school. His two oldest attend the University of South Carolina. When not at school, Mr. Schmenk enjoys traveling and coaching at a local youth fencing club which he founded. His many hobbies include fencing, fishing, swing dancing and sailing. He especially enjoys reading nonfiction, his favorite book being Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
In 2013, the Summerville Journal Scene recognized Mr. Schmenk as one of the ten “Men to Watch.” Mr. Schmenk also sits on a community-advisory board at Trident Hospital, and he coordinates an exchange of teachers from Rheinland –Pfalz, Germany.

Mrs. Natasha Prosser
Mrs. Prosser attended Alston Middle when it was Alston Junior High School. She graduated from Summerville High School, SC State University and The Citadel. She earned her Masters +30 in Curriculum and Instruction. Prior to becoming an Assistant Principal at Alston in 2004, Mrs. Prosser taught science while in the state of Florida, grades 9th-12th. She also taught grades 7th – 12th at Givhans Alternative Program for six years and spent many years serving as teacher/administrator for several programs of Adult Education. Mrs. Prosser was a Teacher of the Year recipient for two years and a Golden Apple Recipient in 2007. Mrs. Prosser is a member of the community advisory board for Trident Regional Hospital, as well as a member of The School of Education Advisory Committee for Charleston Southern University. Mrs. Prosser’s philosophy is that all children can learn and it is our responsibility to allow them to grow and mature during these critical years of their education. Mrs. Jennie Simons
Mrs. Simons joined the Alston Middle School community in the 2015 – 2016 school year, and she is excited to begin another new school year at AMS for 2016 - 2017. Her path to Alston Middle has been an exciting and fulfilling journey. Prior to joining the Alston Middle family, Mrs. Simons taught 6th grade math at Oakbrook Middle School from 2002 – 2007. During this period of time, she was selected as the District Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2003 as well as District Honor Teacher of the Year in 2007. In 2007 – 2008, she served the district as an Instructional Technology Specialist assisting classroom teachers in their integration of interactive technology into daily instruction. From 2008 – 2015, Mrs. Simons served as the Math Interventionist for middle schools in Dorchester District Two where she coordinated district-led curriculum and assessment initiatives for Mathematics and provided needs-based staff development at the school and district level. Mrs. Simons earned her master’s degree in educational leadership from The Citadel in 2014 and is delighted to be a member of the Alston Middle School team!
Mrs. Simons and her husband enjoy spending time with their daughters and son-in-law as often as possible. In addition to those very special family times, she enjoys traveling, reading, and being outside.
