“Back to School” signs are all around us! The sun will begin to set earlier, stores are advertising school sales, vacations are coming to an end, teachers are decorating their classrooms, and football season is just around the corner. As summer comes to a close we usher in the 2018-2019 school year at Anna L. Klein.
New student registration begins on Monday, August 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and continues through August 23rd. Registration forms may be picked up any day of the week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the main office. All screenings and testing will be scheduled for Thursday, August 23rd. Please register your child during this week to avoid any delays. Teachers return on Tuesday, September 4th and Wednesday, September 5th and students return on Thursday, September 6, 2018.
The new school year will offer some changes and unique challenges for everyone especially new students and teachers. Our new staff members include: Alejandra Giraldo, (kindergarten), Hema Teckwani, (bilingual push-in), Julissa DeLaCruz, (bilingual push-in), Keri Moran, (3rd grade), Sara Spindel, (4th grade), Julia Fasano, (7th grade math), Matthew Rivera, (7th grade social studies), Matt Huppert, (7th grade science), Richard Geissler, (8th grade social studies), Mirtha Perez, (Spanish), Evelyn Collazo, (Guidance Counselor 5-8), Stewart Kennedy, (security), and Colleen Zehder, (social worker maternity leave replacement). We would also like to welcome back Flavia Rios and Megan Cohn from their maternity leaves. We wish all our new students and teachers much success during the new school year.
There will be new school goals for the 2018/19 school year including:
To enhance teaching and learning.
To ensure students attain the NJSLS.
To meet the ESEA targets.
To link data driven decision making to instructional practices and staff development.
To continue to tie the use of technology to curriculum and instruction.
To enhance and strengthen climate and culture.
To reestablish SIOP strategies.
To ensure that PLCs are teacher driven and topic based.
Additional items include again, working with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office on social media and sexting safety programs for grades 5-8; continue to implement writers workshop in grades K-5; continue to infuse Character Education Programs (PRIDE) for grades K-8 and include student involvement in the area of peer mediation. Several classrooms have been painted as well as the third floor lockers. New flooring has also been placed down in the second floor hallways and the cafetorium. The second floor hallway has also been painted as well as the stairwells. Additional security measures have been upgraded.
During the month of September we encourage parents to communicate with your child’s teacher and the administration of the school. On Wednesday, September 26th we conduct “Meet the Teacher Night” from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. for grades 6th – 8th and on Thursday, September 27th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. for grades PreK – 5th for that purpose. If you have specific issues to be addressed please make an appointment to meet with the teacher or administrator. Please review the calendar/handbook and our school planner with your child as these items are very important to maintain strong student – parent – school coordination.
We will continue with our extended day programs beginning in October and these include TESOL to assist with our ELL learners, Aim High to help with LAL and Math, and the It’s a Wrap program on Saturday’s which is project based. Let’s not forget the Anna L. Klein School PTO, which raises thousands of dollars each year for the children and will need support from all of us again this year.
As you can imagine, we are all anxious to begin the new school year and to meet the challenges awaiting us at A.L.K. We have worked and planned diligently this summer to make this a wonderful year. We are very proud of our past accomplishments and are looking forward to a successful future. Please continue to support your children and our teachers so we can make this a special year at Anna L. Klein School.
