Welcome to Dishman Elementary where students strive to be CHAMPIONS every day in every way! Our grade level consists of 4 teachers with classrooms filled with 16-23 little ones.  The things that you may see in a Kindergarten classroom have changed over time.  Once a place of sand & water tables that included pretend play, kindergarten has changed into a full year of academic rigor with an emphasis on problem solving.  In READING, teachers facilitate a love of books and literacy in general.  Students work to recognize all letters and sounds, short and long vowels, blends and digraphs. They are encouraged and allowed to build speed, accuracy and comprehension, with a concentration on oral reading. Writing is incorporated throughout the year and is used as a cornerstone for reading instruction.  In MATH, students are working on counting (to at least 100 by ones & tens), cardinality, understanding relationship between numbers (greater than, less than, equal), base ten number operations (represent numbers from 11 to 20 in groups of tens & ones,), shapes (2-D & 3-D) & their characteristics, and number operations such as addition & subtraction.  There is also an emphasis on mastering socialization skills, developing effective listening skills, and following multi-step directions
