Annual Assessment

Requirements & Registration

Grades K - 2

The Smarter Balanced state test starts in 3rd grade. For grades K-2, an alternative method of assessment that measures a student’s academic progress each year is required. This can take the form of a portfolio assessment or other approved standardized assessment.

Option 1. Complete a Portfolio : Most families choose this option for their K-2 students. The portfolio directions and rubric for this option are included below. These are due June 9th and also count as a work sample and a weekly contact. This is a great opportunity to work with your child/ren to talk about and celebrate their learning this year.

Option 2. Standardized Assessment: K-2 students are not old enough to participate in the state Smarter Balanced assessment. However, you have the option of using your Instructional Support Fund through OASIS to pay for a standardized assessment through the Family Learning Organization (FLO). Please register for the test here. These tests are mailed to you prior to your testing week preference. They are done at home and must be mailed back within two weeks or you will be charged by FLO for the materials. This late fee cannot be paid from your allocation.

Grades 3 - 8

All Washington State students in grades 3-8 MUST take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC) in Math and Language Arts. Students in grades 5 and 8 must also take the Science MSP. Once tests are completed, results will be provided to your OASIS teacher and mailed to the student’s address on file.

NOTE: It is your right to refuse to participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment. If you refuse to participate your child will be given a score of “zero” by the State and this will negatively affect the overall scores of OASIS and the Orcas Island School District. The OASIS program may be at risk if the participation in required testing remains low. If you still decide to refuse to participate you must complete the refusal form and choose an alternate form of assessment.
