Board Brief: Nov. 20 Meeting

Highlights of November 20, 2017, Wauwatosa School Board Meeting:

  • Official minutes are posted on Board Docs once the Board has approved them during the following meeting.


The Board approved the following:

  • Consent Agenda
  • Revision of Policy 2460 Special Education Services for Students with a Disability Originally presented to the Board during its Nov. 6, 2017 meeting.
  • Negative Aid Resolution – The Board voted to adopt the resolution seeking the assistance of WASB to advocate for a change to the current law involving referendums for districts in the negative tertiary aid category. Click HERE to read full resolution.
  • Voucher Transparency Resolution – The Board unanimously approved the adoption of a resolution regarding Voucher Transparency which supports broad transparency about the amount of taxpayer-funded vouchers for private school tuition to families who qualify based on their family income. In 2017 Wisconsin Act 59 includes private school voucher eligibility expansion along with an additional $6,170,200 in FY 2018 and $9,523,200 in FY 2019; and in Wauwatosa the voucher amount for 17-18 is $7,530 for pupils in grades K-8, $8,176 for pupils in grades 9-12, and the special needs voucher amount is $12,207.     Reports to the Board:


    • New High School Course Proposals: Supervisor of Secondary Education Dave Dentinger, along with teachers from each department, presented four new courses for consideration:
      • o   Sports and Entertainment Marketing - presented by Business Education Teachers from East Ann Ross and West Nick Heiting
      • o   AP Human Geography - presented by Social Studies Teachers from East Tim Arndorfer and West Stephen Oliver
      • o   You Can Make (Almost) Anything 1 & 2 - presented by West Technical Education Teacher Bill Morse

    The Board will take action on the proposed courses at the December 11, 2017, Board meeting.


    • USTEM Update: Director of Elementary Education Kristin Bowers, Supervisor of Elementary Education Rhonda Schum, Underwood/USTEM Principal Jenny Keats, along with USTEM teachers, provided an update on USTEM and plans for future expansion.


    • Board Guidelines 5500B Student Disorder/Demonstrations -- Director of Secondary Education Mark Carter reviewed new Board Guidelines 5500B Student Disorder/Demonstration.


    • 2018-2019 School Year Calendar -- Superintendent Phil Ertl reviewed the proposed 2018-2019 School Year Calendar. He noted that Spring Break was moved to the last week of March rather than around Easter, which is April 21, 2019. Schools will be closed on Friday, April 19th, and Monday, April 22nd will be a teacher work day without students. This calendar is consistent with most districts in CESA #1. The Board will take action on the proposed calendar at the December 11, 2017, Board meeting.
