School Board Brief: October 23rd Meeting

Highlights of the October 23, 2017, Wauwatosa School Board Meeting:

  • Official minutes are posted on Board Docs once the Board has approved them during the following meeting.


The board approved the following:


  • Consent Agenda – October 9th meeting minutes; Personnel Matters; donations.
    • WEA Contract Approval For teachers returning to the district in 2016-17 and 2017-18, the Board voted to maintain the same base wage that the teachers had in the prior year(s). That decision had no impact on the average salary increase of 1.99% that returning teachers received in 2016-17 or on the average salary increase of 2.08% that returning teachers received in 2017-18, both of which were a result of increases in supplemental pay. 
    • 2017-18 Budget Revisions and Tax Levy Approval  The Board approved revisions to the 2017-18 budget that was adopted on June 26, 2017, and set the Tax Levy. Total revisions of $1,051,045 revised the previously approved budget of $91,233,062 to $92,284,107. The School Board determined that $46,367,318 shall be necessary to be raised through taxation to operate and maintain the schools of the District for the 2017-18 school year. The board was provided updates on or discussed the following:


  • Recreation Department Annual Update – Mike Wick, Director of the Wauwatosa Recreation Department provided an annual update on services.


  • R.A.C.E. Team UpdateBoard Members Leigh Anne Fraley and Steve Doman spoke about the R.A.C.E. (Raising Achievement and Cultural Excellence) team, which is predominately a parent group led by Supervisor of Equity Willie Garrison. Both board members expressed support of District administration’s efforts to build community-based mentoring along with parent recruitment to the R.A.C.E-team.


  • City Meetings Update: Shawn Rolland and Dr. Ertl met with the Mayor, City Administrator, and Common Council President to work on a process to align the District and the City to work together. They have scheduled quarterly meetings and will share communications between the City and the District. One of the first things they will collaborate on is Active Tosa Parks and Recreation Plan which is in the works. Mike Phillips will be representing the School Board with that group.

  • o   Tuesday, October 24th, 7 p.m. (with Community) at East High School Auditorium
  • o   Wednesday, October 25th, 9:30 a.m. (with Senior Center) at Hart Park Senior Center
  • o   Wednesday, November 1st, 4:30 p.m. (with Staff/Community) at Longfellow Middle School Auditorium
  • o   Thursday, November 2nd, 7 p.m. (with Community) at Longfellow Middle School Auditorium)
  • o   Tuesday, November 7th, 7 p.m. (with Community) at West High School Gymnasium


  • School Board Election Information: An election will be held in the Wauwatosa School District on April 3, 2018, to elect a board member to serve one year to complete a three-year term for Seat #3. The seat was vacated in August 2017 and filled by appointment in September 2017, beginning on the fourth Monday of April 2018. The appointed board member for Seat #3 is Eric Jessup-Anger. Nomination papers must indicate Seat #3. If more than two candidates file nomination papers for Seat #3, a primary election will be held on February 20, 2018. The first day candidates may circulate nomination papers is December 1, 2017, and the final day for filing nomination papers is 5:00 p.m., January 2, 2018. School Board election forms may be downloaded from the Wisconsin Elections Commission website at


Following the meeting the Board adjourned to inservice about addressing social and mental health issues that impact learning.
